NUKUALOFA: An earthquake of 7.2 magnitude struck off Tonga in the South Pacific Ocean on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

USGS said that the epicenter of the quake was about 280 km southwest of Tonga, at a depth of 167.4 km. According to the US Tsunami Warning System, there was no tsunami threat for the US West Coast, British Columbia, following the earthquake.
Similarly, in a statement, Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology said there was no tsunami threat to the country. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre initially reported a magnitude of 7 for the quake in the Islands near Fiji.
