ISLAMABAD/INDONESIA: An earthquake of 7.0 magnitude hit eastern Indonesia’s Maluku islands on Wednesday, US Geological Survey said, triggering a tsunami warning.
According to the AFP, the tremor’s epicenter was 150 kilometres northwest of eastern Indonesian island of Halmahera at the depth of 48 kilometres.

NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center Hawaii said that hazardous tsunami waves were possible along coasts within 300 kilometres of the earthquake epicentre and warning after the quake.
The earthquake occurred around 13:06 pm local time. The earhquake revised from an initial magnitude of 7.2 reported by the US Geological Survey.
Indonesia’s Meteorology, has warned of possible aftershocks.
Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic the activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where the tectonic plates collide.
On November 21, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit West Java province on Indonesia’s major island of Java, killing 602 people.
