JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has welcomed the decision by the Sudanese parties to implement a 24-hour humanitarian truce as of 6 p.m. today (Tuesday).

The truce aims to ensure the safe passage of civilians and diplomatic missions, as well as the evacuation of the wounded and stranded.

In a statement, the Secretary-General of the OIC, Hissein Brahim Taha, welcomed the acceptance of the truce initiative by the parties involved and called for an immediate ceasefire.

He emphasized the importance of refraining from escalation, protecting civilians and diplomatic missions and allowing the delivery of humanitarian assistance.

OIC calls for longer truce

The Secretary-General further encouraged the parties to reach a longer truce to enable the Sudanese people to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, an Islamic holy rite. He emphasized the readiness of the OIC to use its full potential and capabilities to support humanitarian efforts and resume the dialogue between the Sudanese parties.

The OIC’s welcome of the humanitarian truce initiative comes amid growing concern over the situation in Sudan, where violence has escalated in recent weeks.

The international community has urged all parties to exercise restraint and engage in peaceful dialogue to find a solution to the crisis.

The OIC is an international organization that aims to promote solidarity among Muslim countries and support their common interests.

It currently has 57 member states and is headquartered in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
