6 Killed in Fresh Violence in India’s Troubled Region Manipur

NEW DELHI: As many as six people were killed on Thursday in the fresh wave of violence in India’s violence-hit Manipur, local media reported.

As per media reports the new wave of violence was reported from Churachandpur-Bishnupur border in Manipur. The clashes and firing in the region started early on Tuesday morning. A senior police official said that the exchange of fire has been taking place in the areas of Thamnapokpi, Ngangkhalawai, Khousabung, Kangathei, and L Phainom.

Local media reported that four people from Churachandpur, one person from Bishnupur, and two security personnel were injured during the fresh wave of violence.

More than 150 people have been killed so far in the ongoing violence due to the ethnic clashes between the minority tribal Kuki and the majority Meitei group in Manipur. Hundreds of houses and shops were destroyed by mobs and violent groups in the region.

Earlier, a mob paraded naked two women in the violence-hit northeastern state of Manipur.   “The gang rape of the women happened after the village was burnt down and two men – one middle-aged and another a teenager – were beaten to death by the mob,” a local said. Several opposition leaders, and the international community also criticized the BJP government for not doing enough to quell the violence in the state.
