MEXICO CITY: Attackers killed six people at a party in Mexico on Friday, including an alleged criminal believed to have been attacked in the assault, Police officials said.

The Sonora state prosecutor’s office said that initial probe indicates that it was a direct assault against the leader of a criminal group who had also arrest warrants for attempted, homicide, femicide, and unlawful deprivation of liberty.

It added the unidentified target was killed along with five others people, while 26 people were wounded in the early morning assault in the municipality of Cajeme. According to the Prosecutors they were unable to confirm reports that the party was a 15th birthday party.

Cartel gunmen have a history of attacking social gatherings in the Mexico, where over 420,000 people have been killed in a spiral of drug-linked violence since 2006.

On December 17, attackers opened fire at a party linked to Christmas attended by young people in the central state of Guanajuato, killing several people. Reports quoting officials in the state of Guanajuato said the attack took place in the town of Salvatierra. The state’s prosecutor’s office confirmed that 12 people were killed in the attack. According to authorities 12 people who were wounded in the attack have been shifted to the hospital.  Guanajuato is one of the most violent Mexico states because of the large presence of criminal gangs and feuding among drug cartels.
