WELLINGTON: A LATAM Airlines flight from Sydney to Auckland encountered severe turbulence on Monday, resulting in 13 passengers being hospitalized and approximately 50 persons sustaining injuries.
LATAM Airlines confirmed that flight LA800 experienced a “technical event” during the journey, leading to significant turbulence. Despite the unexpected occurrence, the aircraft managed to land safely at Auckland Airport as scheduled.
First responders from St John Ambulance New Zealand swiftly mobilized to the scene upon receiving notification of the incident. Gerard Campbell of St John Ambulance reported that 13 patients were transported to a local hospital for further medical attention. Ambulance crews attended to approximately 50 patients in total, with one person listed in serious condition and the remaining passengers suffering from moderate to minor injuries.
In response to the incident, LATAM Airlines expressed regret over any inconvenience and discomfort caused to passengers. The airline assured that the safety and well-being of its passengers remain their utmost priority.
