YANGON, Myanmar: In the winter season, 34 wintering birds, including five world rare species, were observed in the Ramsar region of Inle Lake, Myanmar’s second-largest lake, as reported by the state-run daily The Mirror.

The rare species include two types of seagulls, Eurasian coots, pochards, and tufted ducks. Conservation and monitoring efforts were conducted in eight designated grazing areas.

The Mirror’s report highlighted the importance of preserving these wintering birds, emphasizing that the local community has been advised against harming or capturing them.

These migratory birds are crucial in supporting tourism and biodiversity in the region. The collaborative efforts of the community and relevant authorities aim to establish a sustainable bird habitat with international recognition, according to U Tin Mya Soe, the administrator of the Inle Lake Wildlife Sanctuary.

U Tin Mya Soe further explained that the arrival of migratory birds contributes to biodiversity conservation by emphasizing that these wintering birds choose habitats that offer an ample supply of food and ensure their safety. —Xinhua/APP
