SYDNEY: The health authority in Victoria, Australia, issued a public warning on Friday after five measles cases were reported in Melbourne, the state capital.

The infected individuals visited various public venues, including Melbourne Airport, Craigieburn Post Office, and Monash University, between Feb. 19 and March 1, while contagious.

Additionally, one of the confirmed cases traveled to New South Wales and spent a day in Sydney’s central business area, prompting another health alert.

The Victorian Department of Health emphasized the seriousness of measles, a highly contagious viral illness that can lead to uncommon but severe complications such as pneumonia and brain inflammation.

Symptoms, including fever, cough, red or sore eyes, runny nose, and a red maculopapular rash, typically manifest between seven and 18 days after exposure.

Individuals who visited the mentioned sites during the specified dates and times were advised to monitor themselves for any related symptoms closely. —Xinhua/APP
