CHENNAI: Five people were killed and over 100 others injured due to extreme weather conditions and a large crowd at an Air Force show in Chennai, southern India.
To celebrate its 92nd anniversary, the Indian Air Force hosted an impressive airshow at Marina Beach in Chennai on October 6. The event featured nearly 72 aircraft, including the highly sought-after Rafale jets, along with the Tejas and SU-30 fighters.
According to local media reports, hundreds of thousands gathered along the beach as temperatures soared to 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). While the scorching summer heat is typical in India, scientific research stated that climate change is making heat waves longer, more frequent, and more intense.
Earlier this year, the country experienced brutal temperatures exceeding 50°C.
Lawmaker Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, from the state’s ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party, expressed her sorrow over the deaths, calling the reports “painful.”
