5.6-Magnitude Quake Strikes Indonesia

JAKARTA: A 5.6-magnitude earthquake on Monday struck Indonesia’s western province of West Java claiming at least 46 lives and leaving 700 people injured.

Tremors were also felt in Jakarta, which triggered panic among the residents of the capital. The quake left several areas cut off rom the rest of the country.

According to Herman Suherman, an Indonesian official from district ‘Cianjur’, the death toll could increase further because some areas were facing difficulties in carrying out rescue work.

Residents of Jakarta, the country’s capital, fled into the streets in search of safety as dozens of buildings were damaged.

According to the US Geological Survey department, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 6.2 miles in the Cianjur region of West Java province.

The earthquake was recorded at 5.4-magnitude on the rector scale and the epicenter was calculated initially at the 6.8398 degrees latitude of South and 107.1073 degrees longitude of the east, the US Geological department added.
