Tehran: An earthquake measuring 5.1 at the Reichter Scale struck Murmuri city in Iran’s southwestern province of Ilam on Friday.

Iranian state media quoting Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of the University of Tehran, said the quake occurred at 19:06:30 local time at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The latitude of the 5.1-magnitude quake was 32.81 degrees north and its longitude was 47.65 degrees east. There are no reports of damage and injuries due to the earthquake so far.

Iran is situated on major fault lines and is prone to earthquakes.

Four major tectonic plates (Arabia, Eurasia, India, and Africa) and one smaller tectonic block (Anatolia) cause seismicity and tectonics in the Middle East and surrounding areas.

The Iranian Plate is a small tectonic plate that covers the area of Iran and Afghanistan, and parts of Iraq and Pakistan.
