TOKYO, Japan: A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, early Monday morning, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The quake, which occurred at 0:50 a.m. local time, was felt in central Tokyo but did not trigger a tsunami warning.
Ten kilometers below the surface was where the epicenter was found. Japan recently lifted a warning for a potential “megaquake” after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the country’s southern region on August 8. Authorities advised vigilance but stated no immediate evacuation was necessary.
