SELANGOR: About 41 Palestinians injured in the war in Gaza were flown to Malaysia on Friday to receive treatment, officials said.
The Palestinians, aged between eight months to 62 years, were moved to Malaysia from Cairo onboard two Malaysian air force aircraft.
“We carried out this mission purely on humanitarian considerations, and to show our solidarity against what is happening to the people of Palestine,” Malaysian Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin told a news conference after receiving the patients.
“It also shows our nation’s stand against this inhumane genocide.”
He said the injured were selected after a careful assessment to ensure they were fit for the 19-hour flight that made a stopover in Pakistan’s Karachi. The wounded persons were accompanied by 86 family members.
According to Gaza health officials Israel’s relentless bombardment on Gaza has killed about 40,005 Palestinians, mostly women and children and injured 92,401 others.
The war in Gaza has displaced almost the whole population of the besieged enclaved and destroyed much of its infrastructure leaving widespread food shortages.
