38 Killed in Central China Factory Fire

BEIJING: A fire that started at a facility in central China resulted in at least 38 fatalities and two injuries, according to State media on Tuesday, which cited local officials.

As soon as the municipal fire rescue detachment acknowledged the warning, they sent personnel to the area, according to CCTV.

According to the news agency Xinhua, the fire started at a facility in Anyang City, Henan Province, on Monday afternoon.

It said that the fire was put out by 11 p.m. local time. Public security, emergency response, municipal administration, and power supply units came to the scene simultaneously to carry out emergency management and rescue operations.

Fire trucks fight the flames

State television footage from the location showed at least two trucks positioned to fight the flames and significant black smoke plumes from the fire.

After the fire was put out, another video revealed the building’s burned exterior.

According to the government-run People’s Daily, two people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries in addition to the deaths.

Authorities said that “criminal suspects” had been detained concerning the incident but did not disclose any other information. What caused the fire is yet to be identified. — AFP/APP
