AMMAN: Three US troops were killed and many injured during an unmanned aerial drone attack on US forces stationed in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border, US President Joe Biden said on Sunday, blaming Iran-backed groups for the assault.

In a statement, Biden said that they are still collecting the facts of this attack, “We know it was conducted by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Iraq and Syria.”

Arab media also cited Biden as saying that three US troops were killed and many injured during an unmanned aerial drone attack on US forces stationed in Jordan.

Earlier, the US military officials said that a drone attack on a base in Jordan killed three US troops on Sunday, the first-time members of the country’s forces killed as a result of hostile fire during Hamas- the Israel war.

“On January 28, 3 US service members were killed and twenty-five wounded from a one-way attack (drone) that impacted at a base in Jordan, near the Syria border,” the US Central Command said.

Jordan said a drone strike that killed three US troops did not take place on its territory as the US reported earlier, but at military base in Syria near the border.

AFP citied Government spokesperson Muhannad Mubaidin as saying said the “attack that targeted the US forces did not occur in Jordan… It targeted Al-Tanf base in Syria”, where US troops are deployed as part of an international coalition.
