UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan looks forward to the UN Water Conference elevating water in international discussion with an action-oriented result that accelerates the process to meet the goal of clean water and sanitation by end of the decade.
The permanent ambassador of Pakistan to the UN Munir Akram said that this year’s conference has great importance for Pakistan. The conference begins in New York today to deal with water-related issues. A water-stressed country, Pakistan is also among the top ten most vulnerable countries in the world to the negative effects of climate change.
Conference once-in-a-generation opportunity
Co-hosted by the Tajikistan and Netherlands, the conference is being portrayed by United Nations experts as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to expedite the progress towards universal access to clean water and sanitation for all by 2030.
Secretary-General of the conference Li Junhua said that the conference will be an occasion to unite the international community to take action and tackle with the broad challenges surrounding water. He said that the main result of the conference will be a Water Action Agenda that will get new commitments from member states and other stakeholders.
The Conference would bring together Heads of Government, Ministers, and other top-level representatives of governments and the United Nations.
Nearly 3.6 billion people struggle to get enough water to fulfill their needs for at least a month every year, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a Geneva-based UN agency. –APP
