28 Missing as Severe Floods Hit Yemen

SANAA, Yemen: Severe flooding caused by rains in Yemen overnight has destroyed homes and left at least 24 people missing, authorities said on Wednesday.

Al-Mahwit,  province in west of capital Sanaa under Houthi control, triggered landslides that swept through several homes, police said in a statement.

At least 24 people are missing when seven homes were destroyed in the province’s Melhan district, police said.

Casualties are not known but images on social media show bodies wrapped in blankets after the floods.

The mountains of western Yemen are receive heavy seasonal rainfall and since late July, flash floods have killed 60 people and affected 268,000, according to the United Nations reports.

Western and central provinces have been warned of further rain  to hit the region.

World Health Organization issued a warning that in coming months more rainfall is expected in the Red Sea coastal areas besides central and southern area of the country.

UN has sought urgent assistance for near $5 million for emergency response as climate change is affecting Yemen particularly the areas that are under Houthi control and millions are dependent on international aid.
