LIMA: Officials said on Sunday that as many as 27 workers have died in a fire at a gold mine in southern Peru. Police said that a short circuit caused the incident, which broke out last day in a tunnel in the Arequipa region.
Public prosecutor Giovanni Matos told the media that “27 were killed in the fire incident in the mine.

Local press said the blaze started following an explosion at the gold mine in the remote Condesuyos province of the country. News regarding the fire was only published Sunday once police officials had gathered details of the victims, AFP reported.
Rescue officials said, “Our teams have to make the venue where the dead bodies are safe so the teams can enter in mine and recover the dead bodies,”.
