TUNIS: Twenty migrants from sub-Saharan Africa are missing after their boat sank off the coast of Tunisia in an attempt to reach Europe, according to a spokesman for the court that investigates such cases. The vessel had left from Tunisia’s coast and sank on Friday afternoon, with 17 people rescued and 20 still missing.

This is at least the sixth sinking since the beginning of March, with around 100 people dead or missing in these incidents, according to an AFP tally.

The latest tragedy highlights the dangers faced by migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea in search of a better life in Europe.

Tunisia’s coastguard has intercepted more than 14,000 migrants on their way to Europe between January and March alone, which is more than five times the number from the first quarter of 2022.

Tunisia shores departure point for migrants to reach Europe

The country’s shores are only about 150 kilometres (90 miles) from the Italian island of Lampedusa, making it a popular departure point for migrants attempting to reach Europe.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has repeatedly warned of the dangers of these journeys, with many migrants forced to travel in overcrowded and unsafe boats, often with insufficient supplies of food and water.

In addition, they may be at risk of being exploited or falling victim to human trafficking.

The IOM has called on governments to do more to address the root causes of migration, including poverty, conflict, and persecution, and to provide safe and legal routes for those seeking protection or a better life.

The latest sinking off Tunisia’s coast is a tragic reminder of the urgent need for action to address the plight of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean in search of a better future.
