MEXICO CITY: Local officials said that an alleged thief opened fire Tuesday at Mexico City’s airport during a police hunt that left two officials wounded and briefly caused panic among people.

The city’s security secretariat stated that one policeman was shot in the leg and another was run over while chasing a suspect of stealing goods in the airport. The 27-year-old person accelerated towards a passenger terminal of the airport, colliding with several cars before he was arrested by policemen, it added.

Images shared on different social media platforms showed frightened employees and travelers at the airport. However, officials said that “no passenger was put at risk” during the shooting.
While drug-related violence is common in Mexico, shootings in public spaces are relatively infrequent in the capital.
