ISLAMABAD: Eighteen Pakistani universities have secured prestigious places in the QS World University Rankings 2027, marking a significant milestone for the country’s higher education sector and demonstrating the growing strength of its academic institutions on the global stage.

The latest rankings, released by the UK-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), showcased a mixed but largely encouraging performance from Pakistani institutions.

Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) retained its status as the country’s highest-ranked institution (QS 381), while the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) staged a remarkable recovery, climbing from the 721-730 band in the previous edition to joint 560th place globally.

QAU maintained its position at the forefront of Pakistani higher education, while the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) continued to feature prominently among the nation’s top institutions (QS 384). PIEAS emerged as the standout performer, posting significant improvement to become the country’s third-highest ranked university.

Punjab and Islamabad lead the way as regional representation expands

The rankings highlighted the growing strength of institutions in Punjab and Islamabad, which continued to dominate the list with multiple universities earning recognition. The University of the Punjab secured an impressive 588th position, followed closely by Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) at 608th, University of Agriculture Faisalabad at 629th, COMSATS University Islamabad at 639th, and Government College University Faisalabad at 691st.

The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore was placed in the 791-800 band, while the prestigious Aga Khan University and the University of Peshawar earned places in the 951-1000 bracket. The University of Lahore secured a spot in the 1001-1200 band, with several other institutions including the University of Karachi, Bahauddin Zakariya University, International Islamic University Islamabad, Riphah International University, and the University of Management and Technology all earning places in the 1201-1400 category. The Islamia University of Bahawalpur was also recognised in the 1401+ group.

The representation of universities from across the country, including Sindh through the University of Karachi, demonstrated the broadening footprint of Pakistani higher education institutions in global rankings.

Research excellence shines through despite resource challenges

Educationists noted that global rankings were increasingly influenced by indicators such as sustainability and citations per faculty, areas where Pakistani institutions have shown promising potential despite resource constraints.

QAU emerged as a global standout in research impact, obtaining an outstanding score of 97.2 out of 100 in the citations per faculty indicator and ranking among the top 60 universities worldwide on that measure – a testament to the quality of research being produced in Pakistan.

While experts acknowledged that challenges remain in research funding, international collaborations, and faculty development, the overall trajectory points toward continued improvement. Analysts expressed optimism that with sustained investment in research infrastructure and internationalisation, Pakistani universities would continue to enhance their global standing.
