MEXICO CITY: At least eighteen people were killed in Mexico after a passenger bus carrying migrants and locals fell off a highway into a ravine on Thursday.

The bus, which was headed from Mexico City to the northern border town of Tijuana was carrying around forty-two passengers, including citizens from Dominican Republic, India, and some African nations.

According to the civil protection agency in Nayarit state, three children were among those killed.

At least 23 people were wounded and were shifted to the hospital.

Authorities said that some passengers were on their way to the US border when the accident happened.  The driver has been arrested as the state officials suspect him of overspeeding and losing control in the accident, according to media reports.

The security and civil protection secretary for Nayarit Jorge Benito Rodriguez said that rescue efforts have been too difficult as the ravine was about forty meters deep.

Accidents in Mexico

Mexico has witnessed many such fatal accidents leading to the deaths of migrants making the risky journey to the United States.

In July, at least twenty-nine people were killed after a passenger bus crashed into a ravine in Oaxaca state.

In February, at least seventeen people died in a bus accident between central Puebla and Oaxaca, involving migrants from Colombia, Venezuela, and Central America.
