KABUL: As many as 16 people were killed and 24 others sustained injuries when a blast targeted a religious seminary in Aybak, the northern city of Afghanistan, hospital sources told AFP on Wednesday.
A doctor in Aybak hospital said the victims of the blast were mostly young people.
“All of the victims are ordinary people and children,” the doctor told AFP, while seeking anonymity.
An official of the provincial government confirmed the blast at Al Jihad religious seminary; however, could not provide figures about the casualties.
Interior Ministry Vows Action Against Culprits for Killed in Blast
The Taliban said 10 students of the seminary were killed and several other were injured in the blast.
“Our security forces and detectives are making efforts to identify the perpetrators involved in this unforgivable attack and give them exemplary punishment for their deeds,” Abdul Nafay Takor, Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman tweeted.
Images and video circulating on social media showed Taliban fighters making their way through dead bodies lying on the floor of the seminary building. – APP/AFP
