NEW DELHI: The Indian Army said 16 soldiers were killed in India’s remote northeast mountainous area on Friday when the military truck skidded down a steep mountain slope and crashed.
The accident took place in Sikkim state while the truck carrying the military personnel was negotiating a dangerous turn in a mountainous area near the Indian border with China.
“A rescue operation was launched immediately, and four soldiers, who sustained injuries, have been airlifted to the hospital,” the eastern command of the Indian Army said in a statement, confirming three military officers and 13 soldiers had died in the accident.
Roads in Indian Sikkim state
The Sikkim state has some of India’s most dangerous high-altitude roads, particularly along its isolated Himalayan border with Tibet.
In August, six paramilitaries were killed in an accident in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu Kashmir (IIOJK) when an armoured vehicle carrying them rolled down a mountain slope.
