KHARTOUM: Local officials said on Friday that as many as 14 workers were killed after a gold mine collapsed in northern Sudan. Officials said that the fatal collapse occurred after one of the hillsides gave way on Thursday. Authorities said that many workers are still missing among the debris. Sudan state-run news agency said that the incident happened when the workers were searching inside mining wells for gold while using heavy machinery.

Several of the dead bodies, mostly of young people, have been recovered from the mine and a rescue operation is underway to recover the missing people. An official source cited by the state-run news agency said workers are feared to be trapped in the mine.  Collapses are very common in Sudan’s gold mines, where safety standards and maintenance are very poor. In 2021, at least 31 people were killed when a defunct gold mine collapsed in the West Kordofan province of the African country. Sudan is a major gold producer with several mines scattered across the country.
