14 killed in Plane Crash in Brazil’s Amazon State: Officials

RIO DE JANEIRO: As many as 14 people were killed Saturday when an aircraft crashed in Brazil’s Amazon state, governor Wilson Lima said.

According to the governor, the accident occurred in Barcelos, a popular tourist spot. In a statement via social media, the governor confirmed that 12 passengers and two crew members were killed in the crash. Local media reported that there were no survivors of the crash.

A local media outlet reported that the airplane was an 18-passenger EMB-110 manufactured by Brazilian aircraft maker Embraer. The aircraft was reportedly on its way from Manaus to Barcelos, around a 90-minute flight.

Located on the Rio Negro, Amazon is bordered by several national parks and other protected areas.
