YANGON: Local officials said on Wednesday that as many as 12 people are missing following a vessel foundered in a whirlpool on a river in Myanmar. In a statement, the officials said that the boat was traveling as part of a group via Mingin township in Sagaing region when it sank around 10 am on Tuesday.

The statement maintained that three company officials, 6 civilians, and 3 security personnel are missing after the accident. As per local media reports about 100 people were on board and British media cited local people as saying 12 bodies had been found. Local officials said that the incident is being probed but did not provide more details in this regard.
In 2016, as many as 73 people, including teachers and students, drowned when their overloaded boat capsized on the Chindwin River in Myanmar.
