KABUL: Over 1000 Afghan civilians were killed in blats and other violence since foreign troops left and Afghan Taliban took over in 2021, UN’s mission to Afghanistan said on Tuesday.

According to the UN Mission to Afghanistan (UNAMA), 1,095 civilians were killed and 2,679 injured between August 15, 2021 and May in the current year, underlining the security challenges even following the end of war in the country.

The majority of deaths – just more than 700 – were caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) including suicide attacks in public places like education centers, markets and mosques. Reuters reported that though armed fighting has decreased dramatically since Afghan Taliban took over in August 2021 as the NATO-led military collapsed, security challenges remain, especially from ISIS. The UNAMA said that ISIS was responsible for the majority of attacks in Afghanistan.

Afghan Taliban said they have carried out many raids to eradicate Daesh cells from the country.  According to UNAMA, 1,700 casualties, including injuries, were attributed to explosive assaults claimed by ISIS.

The interim government foreign affairs ministry said that they had faced security challenges during war for decades but took measures to improve the situation.
