ISLAMABAD/KHERSON: A Russian strike on Kherson – a city recently recaptured by Ukraine – killed at least 10 people and injured 58, Ukrainian authorities said.
Shortly after the incident, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the attack as an act of “terror.” “These are not military installations,” Zelenskiy wrote in a post on Telegram. He published photos depicting streets strewn with burning cars, smashed windows, and bodies and said the attacks were “killing for the sake of pleasure and intimidation.”
“It is the real life of Ukraine after the Russian invasion… The world must understand and see what absolute enemy we are fighting against,” the Ukrainian President said.
Pro-Moscow official blames Kyiv for Kherson attack
A pro-Moscow official responded by saying that Ukrainian forces had launched the attack with the intent to blame the Russian military.
Vladimir Saldo, the region’s Russian-installed governor, said Kyiv had ordered troops to shell the city. “This is a disgusting provocation with the obvious aim of blaming the Russian armed forces,” he wrote on Telegram.
Despite Russia’s retreat from Kherson in November, the city remains within reach of Moscow’s weaponry and under constant threat. On December 15, Russian shelling killed two people, including a Red Cross worker in Kherson, completely cutting power in the southern city.
